What Janel did

  • This isn't a course about newsletters. It's a system for running one. Workflow-as-product — the buyer gets a process, not information. Janel spent 150+ hours building it.
  • $59 sits at the high end for Notion templates (sweet spot is $20–$60). But Janel doesn't position it as a template. She calls it an "operating system" and that framing makes $59 feel reasonable.
  • The launch strategy is the real story here. Pre-launch: 15 copies in 90 minutes, $1K in under 24 hours. Product Hunt: #7 product of the day, 519 upvotes, 60 sales on launch day. Then Mashable and Wired both covered it. She built in public on Twitter (@JanelSGM, 12.5K followers) to warm up the audience before launch.
  • We detected a Facebook pixel — she added paid traffic later to extend the initial momentum. At $59 AOV, the unit economics work for ads.
  • Honest transparency: our snapshot data shows growth slowed sharply. 1,145 sales by Aug 2021, but only 536 more over the next 4.5 years. From mid-2024 to today, barely any new sales. This is a launch execution masterclass, not a passive income story. The lesson is how she captured $35K+ from a single well-executed launch.

How the page sells

The copy

Professional indie voice. About 700 words, well-organized sections with headers. Reads like someone who actually runs a newsletter writing about their own setup.

Visuals

2 cover tabs, no inline images. Clean but text-heavy. The copy does the selling here, not the visuals.

Social proof

5.0 stars, 44 ratings. But the real standout is 3 named testimonials with links to actual businesses. You can click through and verify these are real people. Strongest trust signal of any mid-range page we looked at.

Pricing

3-tier pricing: $59 (product) / $129 (product + consultation, marked "0 left") / $70 (consultation only, "2 left"). The sold-out tier creates scarcity that pushes people toward the middle option. Whether it actually sold out or was always set to zero, the effect is the same.

Clever move

Only page we found with a real FAQ section (5 questions). "You'll benefit from this if:" section explicitly qualifies the buyer. There's also an accessibility pledge for students and low-income buyers. The FAQ alone probably handles half the objections that would otherwise kill the sale.

Worth stealing

Add tiers, even if one is marked sold out. Write an FAQ. Qualify your buyer explicitly so people who aren't a fit self-select out before they buy and leave a bad review.

Steal This Playbook

  1. 1Identify a creator workflow you already do well — newsletter, podcast, YouTube, freelancing. Build the system you wish existed when you started. Janel spent 150+ hours on hers — quality matters at $59.
  2. 2Check your niche's price distribution on InfoProdSpy. If the median Notion template is $9 and you're pricing at $59, you need strong framing like "operating system" to justify the jump. If the median is already $40+, you're in safer territory.
  3. 3Plan your launch carefully. Janel's playbook: build in public on Twitter to warm up the audience, then launch on Product Hunt for a spike (she hit #7, 60 sales on day 1). The launch window is where most of the money comes from.
  4. 4Add 3 tiers: product / product + consult / consult only. Mark one as sold out. The sold-out label creates urgency on the remaining options. Janel's tiers: $59 (product) / $129 (product + consult) / $70 (consult only).
  5. 5Name your testimonials with links to real businesses. "Sarah, founder of X" lands differently than "Great product! — S."
  6. 6Be realistic about the lifecycle. Janel's product made most of its money in the first year. Plan to capture value fast and have your next product ready, not to live off passive income forever.
